United to End Racism and The United Nations World Conference Against Racism
In 2000, United to End Racism (UER) was accredited by the United Nations World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance (WCAR) as a non-governmental organization (NGO). UER participated in the NGO Forum of the World Conference Against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance, in Durban, South Africa, at the end of August 2001 by sending a delegation of fifty people.
At the NGO Forum, UER offered a full schedule of workshops, panels, and support groups each day to give people the opportunity to learn what we understand about racism and the distress patterns underlying it. Every day we had at least one general introductory workshop ("Healing the Damage Caused by Racism") and two other workshops, each addressing a specific group or topic (e.g. youth, men, women, colonized people, indigenous people, the role of white people, intersection of racism and anti-Semitism, etc.). There were also support groups and panel speak-outs throughout the week.
UER has continued its contact with many of the people met at the WCAR and has assisted other groups involved in eliminating racism to learn and use the tools of Re-evaluation Counseling.
