Introduction

It is possible to limit the effects of human-caused climate change and restore the environment—and some big changes are needed if this is to happen. These changes will require a massive movement, spanning the globe, of people of every background.

In Sustaining All Life (SAL), we believe that the barriers to building a sufficiently large and powerful movement include:

  • longstanding divisions (usually caused by oppression) between nations and between groups of people within nations,
  • widespread feelings that it’s too late and any actions will be ineffective,
  • denial of or failure to engage with the climate emergency, and
  • difficulties in effectively addressing the connections between the environmental crisis and the failures of our economic system.

Sustaining All Life works to address these issues and others.

SAL with No Limits for Women presents Women on the Frontlines of
Climate Change

SAL is presenting a virtual workshop--Women on the Frontlines of Climate Change at the Commission on the Status of Women's forum, Wednesday 12 March, 8:30 - 10 am EDT.

Women are a revolutionary force. They have been at the forefront of many important social movements. They play a vital role in the climate movement. As climate change continues to be a global threat, Women and girls are disproportionately impacted, especially in the Global South. This amplifies the existing inequalities they face such as threats to their safety, health and well-being.

In this event we will be hearing from a diverse panel of women, as we look at: * How systemic and structural sexism limit women’s access to the resources and experiences that can better prepare them to handle disasters and adapt to climate change * Tools that equip us to face the emotional impact of the climate emergency, listening to each other without interruption and supporting each other’s natural healing processes. * Healing from the damage done by sexism and male domination, making it possible for women’s voices to be central in decision-making.

The workshop will be at this link: https://us06web.zoom.us/j/2918667997?pwd=azE0ZlR3TXpRZVY1aDlUZlpvWG9sUT09

Our Activities

SAL/UER at the COPs and climate action summits presents a series of daily workshops, forums, support groups, listening projects, introductory classes, caucuses, and more.

SAL workshop presenters share their perspective on key topics related to the climate emergency and how we have used the tools of Re-evaluation Counseling to free ourselves and others from emotional hurts that have interfered with our functioning. The workshops are interactive, giving participants the chance to share their experiences and be listened to awarely.

SAL forums provide opportunities for people impacted by climate change, activists, indigenous people, and others to speak to an assembled group with their story. Periodically the flow of speakers is paused to give the audience the opportunity to exchange listening with one another in pairs. Everyone appreciates the chance to tell their stories to an interested audience, as well as the chance to hear others' stories.

SAL/UER at COP29

Sustaining All Life / United to End Racism (SAL/UER) were represented by a small delegation of 6 in Baku, Azerbaijan, for COP 29, from November 12th to 16th 2024. We were present in both the Blue and Green zones. Although we acknowledge the COP is compromised by being held in Baku, we attend to maintain and strengthen the relationships we have built there. We presented this workshop in the Blue Zone:

"Foster Regenerative Cultures through Transformative Education for Children and Youth.  Engaging children and youth in new curriculums to foster sustainable ways of life. Integrating whole systems design in transformative education for regenerative societies through building community, mindful consumption, conscious food systems, use of resources, & connecting spiritually with nature."

Kavita Dhamale (India) and Iman Awadh, SAL (England) will present for SAL/UER.

We were invited to co-lead this workshop by the Global Peace Initiative of Women and Dharma Drum Mountain Buddhist Association.  All Civil Society presentations in the Blue Zone are collaborative efforts like this. More information here.

Listening circle at the AntiCOP

SAL/UER at the AntiCOP

SAL/UER also attended AntiCOP 2024: Global Gathering for Climate and Life, in Oaxaca, Mexico November 4 - 9.  Statement from the AntiCOP: "After 28 years of climate COPs where the ambitions of a few eclipse the urgent needs of the populations most impacted by the climate crisis, we have decided to redirect our focus to building a meeting that articulates the resistances, voices, and concerns of the communities of the Global South. ...

Throughout the six days of the Gathering, we participated in work tables, workshops, cultural exchanges and assemblies, strengthening the ties between international climate movements and grassroots territorial processes, addressing different problems that affect the global climate crisis, such as impact of extractive megaprojects, migration and forced displacement, the global water crisis, the commodification of life and the violence of armed groups and organized crime on organizational processes, thus articulating a global movement that places the defense of life in the center."

We presented two workshops--one on leading listening circles and one on how oppressions divide us.  We did listening circles daily.
